[Class 110 (iii)] [See also Group XXXIV] A wind-wheel shaft 11 drives a pump rod 9 through gearing 17, connecting rods 20, a cross-head 26, and a universal joint 28, 29. The cross-head carries a roller 25 which runs between guides 21, 22. An oil reservoir 14 is provided in the mill head, and a pump plunger 34 is arranged in the guide 22. This plunger is raised towards the end of the upstroke of the crosshead 26 by a sleeve 42, and on the following downstroke it falls, and lubricating oil is forced through a bore within it and spills into a tray 45 from which it passes to the cross-head and joint bearings, and then over a shield 50 to a sump 52. The overflow from the sump passes to the main bearings of the shaft 11, and to the reservoir 14. A hole 63 admits oil to the pump to keep it primed. Auxiliary means are provided for maintaining the supply of oil in the sump 52. They comprise discs 58 pivoted loosely on the gears 17. During rotation they dip into the oil reservoir 14 and are then wiped by pins 59. |
