An example technique may include receiving, by a mobile station, one or more data packets from a base station in a wireless network; and sending, by the mobile station, a control message that includes a local Acknowledgement that acknowledges receipt by the mobile station of one or more of the data packets from the base station, the control message also including a buffer status report that indicates an amount of data in an uplink buffer of the mobile station that is awaiting uplink transmission to the base station.
