<p>Alkali metal sulphides are obtained by reacting an alkali metal amalgam, derived from the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solution using a mercury cathode, with sulphur or an alkali metal polysulphide. The reaction may be carried out continuously in apparatus separate from or connected to the electrolytic cell, the mercury set free being returned to the cell. Pure products may be obtained by ensuring the presence of amalgam and sulphur or polysulphide throughout the reaction, and stoichiometric ratios between the sulphur or polysulphide and the alkali of the amalgam may be maintained. An example relates to the production of sodium sulphide using an aqueous or hydroalcoholic solution of sodium polysulphide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also the use, in the process, of the alkali metal derived from the electrolysis without its amalgamation with mercury using for instance cells with porous or liquid diaphragms, and includes examples of the preparation of both sodium and potassium sulphides. This subject - matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.</p> |
