The friction material (1) has a base portion which is provided with a strip (2) having a length (3) and a width (4). The strip is provided with several thin areas only extending over specific portion of the width of the strip. The thin areas are designed as slots (6) and grooves. The slots or grooves run approximately orthogonal with respect to the length of the strip. An independent claim is included for the friction element.
