Selective subcarrier processing of a received multicarrier (OFDM) signal comprises determining whether a signal quality (e.g. SNR) of the received multicarrier signal is better than a predetermined signal quality, wherein the predetermined signal quality is selected to ensure that a probability of error free decoding of the received signal is greater than a predetermined threshold, and after determining that the signal quality of the received signal is better, determining which subcarriers of the multicarrier signal to perform receive signal processing on based on a relative signal quality of each of the subcarriers. By not processing all subcarriers, power consumption is reduced. The subcarrier selection may involve the use of log likelihood ratios (LLRs) and the use of a parity check matrix based on LDPC (low-density parity check) encoding. The selection may be based on the orthogonality of a channel matrix of each subcarrier. The power consumed per processed subcarrier, and a probability of decoding error may be used for the selection. MAC layer information obtained from previous packets may be used. In an alternative embodiment the subcarriers are selected based on a function of a selected coding rate. |
