The present invention is related to a water-based ink composition containing an extender part and a pigment base part, characterized in that a binder in the extender part is a combination of a lignin, at least one acrylic resin and at least one co-resin, wherein said co-resin is selected from the group consisting of polyamides, polyurethanes, polyurethane-acrylic copolymers, polyvinylalcohol resins, polyvinylacetates, sulfopolyesters resins, styrene-butadiene rubbers, ethylene-acrylic acid copolymers, perfluoropolyethers resins, polyolefins and chlorinated polyolefins, preferably from the group consisting of polyamides, polyurethanes, polyvinylacetates and sulfopolyesters resins. The present invention is furthermore related to a method for manufacturing said composition, to the use of said binder or ink composition for applying a layer onto an article, and to said article.
