A vehicle 10 includes sensors for obtaining data indicative of the status of at least one parameter of the vehicle; a memory 12 for storing the obtained data; and a processor 14 which processes at least a proportion of the data to create meta-data. One or more communication devices 16 are provided and receive a data query from a remote server 20. A controller 40 is configured to select data or meta-data appropriate to respond to the received query and to identify the appropriate communication device with which to send the data or meta-data and also to schedule the transfer of the data to the remote server. The scheduling may include delaying until an off-peak time or until the vehicle can communicate via Wi-Fi (RTM). Further, a data manager for use on a vehicle is operable to record data from a plurality of sensors, save the data locally, process the data to create meta-data and provide anonymous meta-data to a remote server in response to an interrogation from the server. Additionally provided is a server configured to send queries to a plurality of vehicles, receive responses from the vehicles and to further process and analyse the data to provide meta-data. |
