[Class 38 (iv)] Temperature.-In a system for controlling the heating of railway carriages, relays are selectively energized by a galvanometer connected with a Wheatstone bridge and one arm of this bridge comprises a series connection of temperature - sensitive resistances as follows : one at each end of a carriage exposed to external temperature and to wind, one in the conduit 28, Fig. 2, supplying the heated air, and in each compartment, a resistance 32 in contact with the ceiling and subject to its temperature and also to the temperature of the air circulating over it, one 26 subject to the air leaving the ceiling and others 33, subject to the air in the compartment, for example, placed on the rail of the luggage rack. The connections of the galvanometer coil 12, Fig. 1, are adapted to be reversed each time it closes contacts 14, that is to say alternately on excessive and insufficient temperature. This closure connects a coil 16 across one of the members of the bridge and increases the action of the coil 12. The coil 16 actuates contacts 16a, 16b in series respectively with coils 23a, 23b which operate three mercury-in-glass change-over switches 17, 17a, 17b, as shown, to effect the required circuit changes, including the selective operation of the temperature controlling relays 24, 25. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also a system for heating electrically and alternatively by steam and shown in Fig. 3 (Cancelled). Three control systems C, C<1>, C<2> operate respectively to regulate the temperature of the air, to prevent the temperature of heating air falling below a desired value and to control electric heating resistances 46 under the floor. Locomotive steam when available operates at 41 to close contacts 34 and 40. A relav 38 in series with the controllers C, C<1> is energized to open a steam valve on an air heater and a fan 39 is operated to circulate the air heated. When the carriage is in motion and the generator is operative, contacts 42, 42a close. The former, with contact 44 render air heating resistances 43 operative when no steam is available and the latter energizes the fan at such times; the controllers C, C<1> are then operative on the resistances 43 and a relay 47 opens a contact 47a to de-energize the floor heating resistances 46 when the resistances 43 are active. When the carriage is in service on electrified track a relay 48 is energized and special resistances supplied from the track are placed under the controllers C, C<1>. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
