A media application is disclosed. The media application provides a playback of a media item that includes a video portion and an audio portion. The media application stops the playback of the video portion of the media item while continuing to provide the audio portion of the media item. The media application resumes the playback of the video portion of the media item in synchronization with the audio portion being provided.

1. A method comprising:
providing, by a first application executed by a processing device in a computing device, a playback of a media item comprising a video portion and an audio portion, wherein the playback of the video portion occurs on a display device of the computing device; in response to the display device being powered off during the playback of the media item, stopping the playback of the video portion on the display device while continuing to provide the playback of the audio portion while the display device is powered off; and in response to the display device being powered on during the playback of the audio portion without the playback of the video portion, resuming the playback of the video portion, wherein resuming comprises coordinating synchronization of the playback of the video portion with the playback of the audio portion that continued to be provided while the display device was powered off.
