A system and method for improving engine starting and stopping is described. In one example, turbine vanes are adjusted to increase engine exhaust backpressure to reduce engine stopping time and to limit engine speed overshoot during engine starting. The system and method may reduce engine emissions and improve a vehicle driving experience. |

1. An engine system, comprising:
an engine; a turbocharger coupled to the engine, the turbocharger including adjustable turbine vanes; and a controller including non-transient instructions to adjust a turbine vane position in response to an automatic engine stop request generated without an operator directly requesting an engine stop, the turbine vane position adjusted to increase an engine exhaust backpressure, and additional non-transient instructions to adjust rotational resistance of the turbocharger in response to a temperature of an after treatment device. |
