The invention provides neuregulin antagonists and methods of using the neuregulin antagonists in delaying the time to tumor recurrence or preventing resistance of cancer cells to treatment with a therapeutic agent.

A method of increasing time to tumor recurrence in a cancer patient whose cancer was previously treated comprising administering to the patient an effective amount of a neuregulin antagonist and a chemotherapeutic, wherein the neuregulin antagonist is an anti-NRG1 antibody and wherein the chemotherapeutic agent is selected from the group consisting of paclitaxel, cisplatin, and a combination of paclitaxel and cisplatin and further wherein the cancer is selected from the group consisting of non-small cell lung cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, head and neck cancer, cervical cancer, bladder cancer , oesophageal cancer, prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer.
