A payment system for registered users, that comprises user modules (1) which are intelligent electronic devices; a service provider, merchant modules (3) associated with respective merchants and an authorized payment processor (4), and the service provider (2) has a records module (21) for recording data associated with transactions made through the system, a user database (22) having respective storage cells associated with each user, each cell comprises separate fields, including a field storing at least the username of the associated user, a field comprising user-related data, and at least one token associated with a payment instrument defined by the user different from the data of the payment instrument, and transaction data corresponding at least pending transactions initiated by the user, a merchant's database (23) having respective storage cells associated with each merchant, each cell comprises separate fields including a field with the merchant's username, a field storing bank account data of the merchant; and a products database storing product-related data offered for sale by the associated merchant; and a processor unit (26) coordinating and controlling operation; the authorized payment processor (4) stores the data of the at least one payment instrument of said users in such a way that upon instructions from the service provider (2) to effect payment of a transaction initiated by a user said data of the payment instrument of this user are read out in response to receipt of the associated token for being forwarded as payment authorization of said transaction. |
