[Classes 103 (ii) and 108 (i)] In a metal vehicle in which the body and chassis are combined the under portion of the body sides is formed in box-sections and the floor or under pan is flanged at its sides to form part of the box-section while the engine is mounted on a short sub-frame which is rearwardly secured to the front portion of the under pan. The latter shown in Fig. 6, comprises a metal sheet having a dipped portion 192, a forked portion 92 at the front and provided with apertures 95 for the battery and 102 for the petrol tank. The sides are flanged downwardly at 136 and outwardly at 138 and the pan is provided on its underside with cross channel reinforcements 130 198, Figs. 11 and 43. A tunnel 96 for the drive shaft is provided together with raised portions 98, 100 for the shock absorbers and differential housing. To the forked part 92 the subsidiary frame 124 is secured comprising box-section girders 226, Figs. 11, 21, 22 which are bolted to the under pan 88 by bolts 294 and to the side flanges or door posts by bolts 276, reinforcing spacing sleeves 270 and packings 292 being provided. The cowl 10 is welded to the flanges 138 of the underpan, Fig. 22, and has hinged thereto the bonnet 18 by means of an arm 46, Fig. 4, pivoted to brackets 52 welded on the sides of the cowl 10 and passing through the front panel 54 of the cowl, being secured to the bonnet by means of a reinforcing member 40 so that the bonnet is pivoted upwardly as shown in Fig. 1. The panel 54 of the cowl 10 is braced to the members 226 of the subframe 124 by means of stays 236, 242, 244, Fig. 9, The front post is channel-shaped facing forwardly, and closed by a plate welded thereto while the middle post is also of channel formation facing inwardly and reinforced by a plate welded thereto. These posts are welded to the roof portion 4 which together with the rear portion forms a unit, the edges of which are flanged and reinforced by plates to form box-section - edges to the rear door opening and upper horizontal edging. The roof 4 has box-section edges by means of a plate 338, Fig. 29, to which the cross bows 452 are welded, packing material 442 being interposed between the cross bows and the roof panel 4. The body panel is spaced from the flange 136 of the under pan and as shown in Fig. 21 at a door threshold is welded to the bottom flange at 366, a reinforcing spacing tube 367 being provided. The rear spare wheel door 360, Fig. 34, is hinged at 492 and is provided with a truncated plate having stiffening ribs 516 and apertures for bolting the spare wheel to the plate. The side door comprises outer and inner panels Fig. 39, welded together, the inner panel 538 being apertured for a cardboard or fabric panel 550. A sliding window 28 and a pivoted window 26 are provided. The battery holder placed in aperture 95 comprises a hoop 594 carrying a base 596 and hooked at 592, Fig. 43, to angle plates 588, 600 bolted to the cross channel members 130, 198, together with a lid 610 bolted to the under pan 88 and also provided with a cover 620 adapted to be snapped into position in an aperture in the lid 610. |
