An N-oxyalkyl-p-phenylenediamine is used as the developing agent in a photographic developer. Suitable compounds are di-(oxyethyl)-p-phenylenediamine, methyl-oxyethyl-, ethyl-oxyethyl-, butyl-oxyethyl-p-phenylenediamine, the corresponding toluidines, and b : g -dioxypropyl-p-phenylenediamine and its alkyl derivatives. The compounds may be prepared by converting the corresponding aniline derivatives, e.g. di-(oxyethyl)-aniline into the nitroso derivatives and reducing the nitroso group or by coupling oxyalkyl-aniline derivatives with diazotized sulphanilic acid and reducing the product. |
