A side-lit backlight module comprises: a light guide plate (101), a plurality of light sources (102), and dark space compensation units (103) each disposed between two adjacent light sources. Light from each light source is transmitted into the light guide plate from a side surface of the light guide plate, and by means of the light guide plate, the light is uniformly emitted from a front surface of the light guide plate. Each of the dark space compensation units is used to provide illumination compensation for a dark space between two adjacent light sources. By means of disposing a dark space compensation unit between two adjacent light sources, a side-lit backlight module for effectively alleviating a dark-space effect is provided, thereby avoiding a defect existing in alleviation of the dark-space effect in the related art. Also disclosed is a display apparatus.
