This image display device has: a light source unit; an image formation means that is provided with a pixel region comprising a plurality of pixels and having the light outputted by the light source unit incident thereon, and forms an image as a result of the modulation of the incident light by each of the pixels; and a control means (10) for controlling the image-forming operation of the image formation means. With a pixel combination formed from the plurality of pixels as a pixel unit, the control means forms an image and individually controls the on state and off state of each pixel that constitutes the pixel combination.
