[Class 130] In apparatus for feeding strips of wad material severed from a sheet or web by a cutting device to the forming mechanism of a filter plug or wad making machine, co-operating surfaces are provided to grip the strip along its length and move it towards the forming mechanism. As shown in Fig. 3, a web 23 comprising three layers of crepe paper interleaved with two layers of cellulosic material, is fed between U-shaped guides' 27 over a plate 26 by fingers 28 mounted on arms 29 and reciprocated from an eccentric strap 31 on the main drive shaft 32 by a slotted link 33 which can be adjusted to vary the width of the strip to be severed. To prevent the lower layers of the web lagging behind the upper layers, the web passes over a continuously rotating roller 24 provided at intervals with roughened surfaces formed by strips of emery cloth. The leading edge of the web passes over a knife 34, Fig. 4, and a spring-pressed pivoted plate 46 and is held by a gripping device before strips are severed by a knife 36 co-operating with the knife 34. The knife 36 is carried by an anglepiece 42 which is actuated by an eccentric strap 45 on the shaft 32. As the angle-piece 42 is moved downwardly a projection engages the plate 46 and moves it out of the path of the knife 36. The cutting edges of the knives are set at an angle to one another so that one edge of the web is cut first and as the knife descends it gradually forces back the knife 34 which is mounted on a block 37 carried by flat spring plates 38 secured to the bed 35 of the machine. The initial tension in the springs may be adjusted by screws 41. Forward movement of the web during cutting is prevented by a spring-pressed member 51 carried on a pivoted link 52 which is oscillated by a projection 54 on the angle-piece 42 engaging a cam surface 55 on the link. Before cutting, the end of the web enters a gripping device which is formed by a plurality of grippers each comprising a jaw 58 and a flat spring 59 connected at one end to the jaw 58. The grippers are secured to an arm 60 which is oscillated on a shaft 61 by a cam 67 on the shaft 32. As the arm 60 moves towards a trough 77, the strip, which has been severed from the web, passes beneath a plate 78 and engages the side 76 of the trough, and during continued movement of the arm 60 is withdrawn from the grippers. The grippers are arranged to operate in succession to release the strip. During the return movement of the arm 60, the grippers are opened by a cam 75 on the shaft 32 which moves arms 69 carrying rollers 68 into engagement with projections 62 carried by the springs 59. To prevent the strip buckling between the points at which it is gripped, weights 78a sliding in bearings 78b carried by the anglepieces 42 contact with the strip as the knife 36 moves downwards and remain in contact with it while the grippers are moving towards the trough. After the strip has been deposited in the trough it is engaged by the plate 78, which is lowered by a cam 86 on the shaft 32, and gripped between the roughened surfaces of a projection 87 on a sliding carriage, which extends through a slot in the trough and a finger 92 extending through a slot in the plate 78. The finger 92 is operated by a roller 94, which engages a cam surface 96 on the plate 78, and is pivoted to an arm 91 on a sliding carriage 88 which feeds the strips lengthwise along the trough to a conveyer and forming and wrapping mechanisms to shape the strips into a continuous rod. In a modified construction, the strips are fed lengthwise to the conveyer by a finger which engages with the rear end of the strip in the trough 77. Specification 462,540 is referred to. |
