PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simply structured particulate matter detecting device that can accurately detect PM quantities and more over more accurately detect any DPF trouble.SOLUTION: A particulate matter detecting device comprises: a PM sensor (5) disposed downstream from a particulate filter (41) that is provided in an exhaust pipe (4) in which exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine (2) flows and which catches particulate matter contained in the exhaust gas flowing in the exhaust pipe, including an insulative sensor element (50), and a pair of electrodes (51 and 52) placed in the sensor element, and outputting a value corresponding to the quantity of particulate matter sticking to the sensor element when voltage is applied between the pair of electrodes; a condition determining unit (6) that determines whether or not predetermined conditions of voltage application are satisfied; and a voltage applying unit (54) that is included in the PM sensor and, when the conditions of voltage application are satisfied, applies voltage between the pair of electrodes. |
