A light-emitting device is provided comprising an excitation light source capable of emitting laser light and a phosphor adapted to convert the wavelength of the laser light and to generate light of converted wavelength. The phosphor is polycrystalline secondary particles each consisting of a plurality of primary particles and containing therein pores with a diameter of 0.2-25 µm. The device produces light of quality in that speckle noise, that gives a glare or strange sense to eyesight when the light is illuminated onto a rough surface, is reduced.
