A window assembly comprising a glazing unit 10; a frame 9 surrounding an opening 1 in a wall or roof and which is arranged to support the glazing unit; and a thermal shield 11 located between the frame and the opening, wherein the thermal shield comprises a structural element 13 and a thermally insulating element 14; wherein the structural element comprises a first material and the insulating element comprises a second material, and wherein the insulating element is interposed between the opening and the frame when the window assembly is installed. The insulating element may be polymer foam and an aerogel. A facing element 15 may cover the side of the insulating element facing the interior of the opening. The structural member may be a C shaped bracket with a recess for holding the insulating element. A condensation channel may be formed between the thermal shield and the frame. A seal 16 may be located between the insulating material and the glazing unit. |
