A vehicle suitable for mounting appliqué armour thereto, including a composite passenger compartment 1 including a structural shell formed wholly or in part of a glass fibre containing composite material, including a plurality of layers of fibrous material bonded with a resin. Appliqué armour 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 is mounted to the composite passenger compartment. The plurality of layers of fibrous material includes both glass fibres and additional fibres providing in composite form a greater ballistic resistance per unit mass than the glass fibre. The additional fibres may include woven or unwoven para-aramid fibre, ultra-high-density polyethylene, PBO, carbon fibre, silk fibre, polyamide, polyester or PIPD. The composite material may include at least five layers of fibrous material. The glass fibre may be in the form of Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastic or GRFP. The appliqué armour may include polycarbonate, alumina tiles and polyurethane adhesive. |
