A method of removing sulfur from a lean NOx trap 4 of a mild hybrid vehicle 10 while the vehicle 10 is stationary, the method comprising connecting an electrical system of the vehicle 10 to a large capacity external battery 20, operating an integrated starter generator 3 driven by an engine 2 of the vehicle 10 as a generator to load the engine 2 thereby allowing the engine 2 to be operated at a higher torque level and rich of stoichiometric and storing the electrical energy produced by the integrated starter generator 3 in the large capacity battery 4 during the time period required for the removal of sulfur from the lean NOx trap 4.
