[Class 132 (iii)] A shuttlecock has a cork, base 1, Fig. 2 provided with a cylindrical chamber 2 in which fits a plug 3 with a reduced end 4 forming an annular cavity 5 which contains wicking or other absorbent material 6 impregnated with oil. The quills 8 of the feathers are inserted through holes 7 in the base 1 and the ends of the quills are embedded in the oiled wicking to render the quills moisture-proof and less brittle. The amount of oil used is such as to bring the shuttlecock up to standard weight. The base 1 is covered with a layer of ikid leather 9 and a tape 10 preferably of different colours. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the cork base 15 has a conical recess in which is inserted a plug 16 grooved at 17, Fig. 7, and cut so as to leave a chamber 19 filled with wicking impregnated with oil. The quills 18 are inserted in the grooves 17 and extend into the wicking. In the construction shown in Fig. 8 the oilimpregnated wicking is inserted in an annular recess 21 in the base 20. Two cords 30 are laced around the quills close to the top of the base and similar cords are laced around the quills above the base. |
