Substances capable of dissolving carcinoma and sarcoma cells are obtained from the products resulting from the culture of normal intestinal bacteria of healthy individuals, (B. Coli), on fatty nutrient media, by methods suitable for obtaining high molecular fatty acids, e.g. liberating the acids by acidulation, extraction by organic solvents and fractional precipitation, the active substance being less soluble than the unwanted acids accompanying it. Use may also be made of the superior solubility of the calcium salts of the active substance over those of the concomitant substances. Suitable culture media are skimmed milk with the addition of vegetable oils or whole milk. The products of bacterial growth are acidified, e.g. with phosphoric acid to pH4, and extracted with ether, petroleum ether &c. The solution being slowly evaporated. The addition of extracts of normal internal organs, e.g. liver, pancreas, thymus enhances the activity of the product. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 active substances of the same kind are obtained from normal blood serum, especially dry serum, by extraction with acid alcohol, neutralization with ammonia, evaporation to dryness and treatment with sodium carbonate to obtain the sodium salt. Urine also may be treated with kaolin under slightly acid conditions, centrifuged, the product rendered slightly alkaline and again shaken up; after separation of the adsorbent, the effective substance is precipitated from the liquid, e.g. by acetic acid, or is extracted with fatty acid solvents. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
