An energy harvesting flooring material comprising a layer of synthetic material and an energy harvesting layer disclosed as a piezoelectric material. The material forms part of an energy harvesting flooring system, for example 680, comprising the flooring material 600 (containing an energy harvesting layer) and an electrical housing 688 containing a rectifier 682 and an electrical storage device 684. The system may also include a load in the form of a lighting system 686. Various example arrangements are disclosed e.g. a six layer laminate comprising a substrate base 410 (cellulose/polyester support reinforced with a 32 tex glass crennette), an undercoat layer 420 (plastics material), an energy harvesting layer 430 (a natural or synthetic piezoelectric material e.g. silk, polymer and/or ceramic material arranged between conductive layers e.g. copper, aluminium), an overcoat layer 440 (plastics material), a decorative layer 460 (an ink layer or a printed film) and a non-slip coating 455 (a plastics layer including abrasive particles 370. Fig 7 (not shown ) discloses a flooring system comprising two types of synthetic flooring material 700A, 700B whilst fig 8A,B (not shown) discloses an underlay including a deformable layer 890 with a resilient honeycombed support structure 895 and harvester layer 830. |
