[Class 53] A dry cell dolly is provided with a wrapping held in place by a thread which is wound simultaneously with the wrapping as shown in Fig. 9, the thread being finally wound round the wrapped dolly as shown in Fig. 14 and secured to the projecting electrode 8<1> by adhesive. Fig. 1 shows a machine for carrying out the above operations in which unwrapped dollies 8 are supported on rollers 7 carried by the links of a conveyer 5. The side chains of the conveyer are sufficiently wide apart to accommodate two dollies placed end to end between them as shown in Fig.. 4, all the devices for applying adhesive and wrapping and tying the dollies being duplicated. Two pieces of wrapping material 42 are first placed on a pair of rollers 7 and a dolly placed on each piece of material. The conveyer then moves the dollies to the position A where means are provided for applying a drop of adhesive to the projecting ends of the electrodes. These means are shown in Figs. 7 and 6 and comprise a lever arrangement 10 which dips a stick 12 in a trough 14 containing adhesive as shown in Fig. 7, and then applies the end of the stick to the end of the electrode as shown in Fig. 6. A pin 16 limits the extent to which the stick is dipped in the adhesive and also steadies the dollies while the adhesive is being applied. The wrapping and tying are carried out in the position B where a roller 17 rotates the dollies beneath it to effect the wrapping. A member 20 pivoted at 18 brings one end of the wrapping material and the binding thread into engagement with the dolly, the thread being fed from a coil 46 through a nozzle 21 which is slidable longitudinally in a holder 21a fixed on a rod 28. As shown in Fig. 8, the rod 28 is reciprocated along the length of the dolly by a lever and cam arrangement 30 so that the thread is wound along the dolly. The arrangement for the second dolly is operated through toothed segments 32. The nozzle 21 is at intervals pushed through the holder 21a and retracted by levers 24, 25 and a cam 26. After the dolly has been wrapped and tied the nozzle 21 is retracted to make way for scissors 34 which cut the thread and are reciprocated by a slider 33a operated by a lever 35. A heated rod 43 holds the cut end of the thread on the end of the electrode that is provided with adhesive until the dolly arrives under a roller 44 which finishes off the fixing of the thread. Fig. 16 shows a modified arrangement for applying adhesive to the electrode stick and comprises a receptacle 113 containing adhesive which flows through an opening 120 into a tube 122 the lower end of which is provided with a tubular outlet 121 situated above the end of the electrode which is to receive the adhesive. The outlet 121 is opened and closed intermittently by a lever and cam operated valve 123. |
