In accordance with various embodiments, a set of features are described for enabling an application server platform for telecom based applications. A system for providing an application server for telecom-based applications can include a computer, including a computer readable medium and processor. The system can also include an application server, executing on the computer. The application server can include an actor container that manages and provides lifecycle and runtime properties for application classes that are executed as actors in the application server. The actor container can manages a set of event transactions, wherein all storage operations are performed as part of the event transaction that spans each event handler invocation.

1. A system for providing an application server system for telecom-based applications, said system comprising:
a plurality of computers each comprising a computer readable medium and a processor; and a plurality of application servers, each executing on one of the plurality of computers, wherein each application server comprises:
a first protocol adapter implementing input and output operations of first telecom-based communications having a first protocol;a second protocol adapter implementing input and output operations of second telecom-based communications having a second protocol different than the first protocol;an event broker operatively coupled with the first and second protocol adapters, the event broker performing a mapping between the first and second telecom-based communications having the first and second protocols and a plurality of protocol-independent and asynchronous events; andan actor container that manages and provides lifecycle and runtime properties for application classes that are executed as a plurality of actors in the application server, the plurality of actors:
subscribing to the plurality of protocol-independent and asynchronous events of the event broker;performing operations on the plurality of protocol-independent and asynchronous events of the event broker; andpublishing to the event broker one or more result events comprising information relating to the performing the operations on the plurality of protocol-independent and asynchronous events; wherein the actor container of each application server of the plurality of application servers manages event transactions of the application classes that are executed as the plurality of actors in the each application server by performing all storage operations as part of an event transaction that spans each event handler invocation.
