The invention provides methods and apparatus for analysis of images of direct part mark identification codes to measure and assess a print quality. Methods to assess the quality of a direct part mark identification code are presented that provide diagnostic information of a code that cannot be assessed using verification methods that require the results of a valid decoding step.

1. A method for verifying a direct part mark identification code, the method comprising:
acquiring at least a first two-dimensional image of the code marked directly on an object for the purposes of verifying a mark quality; using a processor for automatically attempting to decode the code using at least one of the acquired images; in response to the automatically attempting being unable to decode the code in the at least one of the acquired images and prior to attempting to decode the code in any subsequent image, using the processor for automatically measuring aspects of the mark quality using at least one of the acquired images; automatically locating the code in the at least one of the acquired images after the attempt to decode the code using the at least one of the acquired images; and generating overlay graphics in the at least one of the acquired images, the overlay graphics visually highlighting a portion of the image associated with the measured aspects of the mark quality when the code is automatically located.
