[Classes 6 (ii) and 58] [Also in Group XI] A soil-less cultivation cabinet for the germination of seeds and the growth of seedlings comprises a sprinkler system for supplying a fertilizing liquid to a number of trays arranged one above the other in one or more vertical groups, the individual trays being such that the liquid may percolate through them, and the liquid being sprinkled upon an upper tray of each group so that it may percolate through the trays in succession from the uppermost tray to the lowermost. The cabinet consists of a closed sheet-metal body 1 having doors 2 at one end and supported on wooden joists 4 with a tray 5 below it. The body 1 supports a transverse trough 7 communicating through an aperture with a central well 8 from which radiate pipes 10 ending in sprinkler roses 13. The supply of liquid through the aperture is regulated by a valve operated periodically by a ball valve as described in Specification 468,992, [Group XXIX]. Beneath each rose 13 is a group of trays 17 supported one above another on angle-iron runners 14. Below the bottom tray are inclined electric heater tubes 18 covered by baffles 19 and ending in protective boxes 20 into which air is admitted through louvre shutters 21. The temperature may be controlled by means of a thermostat. A flue 32 is provided to allow of escape of heated air, and thus to warm the liquid in the trough 7. The bottoms 17a of the trays 17 may be corrugated and perforated along the tops of the corrugations. When the cabinet is in use liquid is supplied continuously to the trough 7 by a dribble cock and is discharged periodically on to the trays 17 through which it passes to the tray 5 and outlet pipe 6. Glass inserts 30 may be provided to admit light to some of the top trays 17 and electric lamps with glass protectors 31 may be furnished to illuminate the other top trays. In a modification, the cabinet is heated by an external oil-heater and boiler and internal water pipes as described in Specification 473,012. The internal oilheater described in Specification 473,011 and the trays described in Specification 473,010 may be used. According to the Provisional Specification the sprinklers may be provided with screens or filters and may consist of perforated tubes, and the liquid discharged from the lowest tray may be collected and used for initial soaking of the seeds. |
