A lavatory cleansing block comprising: an alkane sulfonate; a carboxymethylcellulose; a hydrophobe; and optionally a dye, wherein the alkane sulfonate is present in an amount of 15 to 40 % by weight of the total block, the weight ratio of alkane sulfonate to carboxymethylcellulose is 3:1 to 8:1 and the total weight of the block is less than 25 g.
