Provided is a peripheral environment recognition device mounted in a vehicle, the device including: a travel route information acquisition unit which acquires travel route information indicating the travel route of the vehicle; a peripheral environment element information acquisition unit which acquires peripheral environment element information that includes spatial position relationship information indicating the position relationship in space in respect to the vehicle, in regards to an environment element peripheral to the vehicle; an environment element travel relationship calculation unit which calculates the relationship of an environment element to the travel of the vehicle, on the basis of the travel route information and the spatial position relationship information; and a peripheral environment information provision unit which provides information regarding the environment element, on the basis of the relationship to the travel of the vehicle calculated by the environment element travel relationship calculation unit.
