The device (202) may comprise: a collection vessel (2024) that can include reagents (2023) necessary for nucleic acid amplification, wherein the collection vessel (2024) may be adapted to accept at least one swab (201) containing a sample; a cap (2021, 2022) integrated with the collection vessel (2024) and having a channel extending therethrough to permit the at least one swab (201) to be deposited in the collection vessel (2024), wherein the channel is closable upon rotation of the cap (2021, 2022); and at least one cutting member (4033) that severs a longitudinal portion of a stem (2011) of the swab (201) extending through said channel upon rotation of the cap (2021, 2022).
