[Class 52 (v)] A collapsable tripod comprises legs 23 hinged to a head 24. a retainer 10 adapted to be passed over the free ends of the legs when closed to guard them and protect their extremities, means such as a screw-thread for securing the retainer in position and a clip 21 carried by the retainer whereby the collapsed tripod can be clipped on to the edge of a pocket. The retainer is threaded at 11 for connection to an extension 12 carrying a ball joint 15 with a screw 14 for the camera, the ball socket 16 having a slot 18 to enable the screw to be turned through 90‹. A slidable member 17 having a concave end engages the ball 15 and is held within the retainer by an eccentric pin 19 carrying the spring clip 21 so that turning the clip through 90‹ looks the ball in its socket. The other end of the retainer 10 is threaded at 25 for engaging the threaded head 24 either with the folded legs inside the retainer, Fig. 1, or with the legs outside in the position of use, Fig. 5. Each leg 23 is pivoted between a pair of flanges 32 on the head and has a camshaped extension 31 adapted to co-operate with a central pin 36 secured to a cover 38 capable of a slight longitudinal movement on the head 24. When the retainer 10 is screwed on to the head 24 shoulders 39 engage the cover 38 and force the pin 40 into contact with the extensions 31, locking the legs in the open position. Each leg comprises a segment of a cylinder provided on its inner face with a groove for the reception of a pivoted lower portion 26, cut-away portions 28, 29 being provided to facilitate opening. The parts 23 of the legs have U-shaped extensions 30 in line with the grooves, with which the extensions 26 contact in their extended positions. The legs may be tubular and may have non-slip pads of rubber. Instead of being of long tubular form the retainer may comprise a short cap. mounted directly on the head 24 and adapted to engage a threaded collar formed on the extremities of the legs when in the collapsed position.</p> |
