The invention relates to substituted oxo-tetrahydroquinolinyl phosphinic acid and phosphinic acid amides of general formula (I) or salts thereof, the radicals in the formula (I) having the definitions stated in the description, for increasing the stress tolerance in plants with respect to abiotic stress, and also for strengthening plant growth and/or for increasing plant yield.
