Aliphatic halogen - nitro - alcohols of the formula R1.CHX.CH(OH).CH(NO2).R2, wherein R1 and R2 stand for aliphatic radicles or hydrogen and X stands for halogen, are made by condensing a halogen-aldehyde of the formula R1.CHX.CHO with an aliphatic nitrohydrocarbon of the formula R2.CH2.NO2. In an example, chloracetaldehyde or bromacetaldehyde is condensed with nitromethane to give 1-chloro-(or bromo-)3-nitro-2-propanol. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of 1-chloro-3-nitro-2-butanol prepared from chloracetaldehyde and nitroethane.
