A gate valve assembly 100 comprises a valve body 20 with an inlet 22 and an outlet 23 and first and second valve elements 31, 33. The second valve element 33 is in sliding contact with the valve body 20 and is slidable between a first position in which the second valve element 31 prevents flow from inlet 22 to outlet 23 and a second position in which the second valve element 31 permits flow from inlet 22 to outlet 23. Initially the first valve element 31 disengages from the second valve element 33 to permit fluid flow through the first flow path in order to equalize upstream and downstream pressure on the second valve element 33. Further operation slides the second valve element 33 from the first position to the second position to permit fluid flow through the second flow path. |
