PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control apparatus for an internal combustion engine, the apparatus capable of easily determining presence of sulfur oxide, as a test object gas, contained in an exhaust gas by using a limiting current gas sensor even in the case of the density of water contained in the exhaust gas being unknown.SOLUTION: In a state where an air-fuel ratio (A/F) of an air-fuel mixture supplied to a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine is held constant, a voltage applied across electrodes of an electrochemical cell (a pumping cell) that has an oxygen pumping action over a range of voltages enabling decomposition of water (HO) and sulfur oxide (SOx) contained in an exhaust gas as a test object gas is increased and decreased gradually. Here, based on a difference in an electrode current between increasing the applied voltage and decreasing it, whether or not to execute a specific action corresponding to a determination that the fuel supplied to the engine contains a sulfuric component of first percentage content or higher is switched.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 |
