A field device for measuring a property of a medium in a vessel, such as fluid in a pipe. The property may be density, viscosity, alcohol content, sugar content, contamination. The device is inserted through a wall (7, figure 1) of the vessel, and may have a mounting flange (18, figure 1) to engage with the vessel. A sensor 10, which may include a vibrating fork, produces a frequency signal depending on the property of the medium. Another sensor 11 measures temperature of the medium, allowing temperature compensation of frequency data. A processing facility 22 uses the sensor signals to generate an output indicative of whether the property is above or below a threshold. A communications facility 27 sends the output to a remote location. An operator interface 26 may allow setting of a threshold. An alarm or a switching operation may occur if a threshold is exceeded. |
