A conveyor moves crisps 8 towards and onto a vertical stack 18 on a support 28. The top of the stack 42 is maintained in alignment with the conveyor 14 as new items are placed on it. Once complete the stack is inserted end 48 first into an elongate package 46 such as a tube which is then closed 52. The alignment could be maintained by raising the conveyor or lowering the stack support continuously or in increments. Ideally the crisps are not planar and shingle ie nest or interlock. A vibrator can be periodically or continuously used to settle the stack. A static elongate guide 34 can define the stacks edge. The stacks size can be measured by sensing its weight or height, or by counting the items on it. The stack could be urged up through the open base of the tube or the tube could be urged down around the stack. Ideally the openable top 46 of the tube will already be on the tube when the stack is inserted and the tube is closed by attaching a base 54. The container can be rotated after inserting the stack so that the base is highest during closing. Multiple infeed endless belt conveyors can regulate their speed to create bunching of crisp intended to be packaged together. |
