[Classes 96 and 140] Foreign substances such as lint, fibre, or coating material are removed from the surfaces of rolls or drums in machines, e.g. for coating paper, by means of one or more contacting rolls having a natural or artificial stone surface, e.g. granite. A roll 1 applying a film of liquid coating material to a travelling web 4, e.g. of paper, is cleaned by means of a contacting stone roll 11 from which the foreign materials may in turn be removed by an adjustablymounted scraper 28. Roll 11 is mounted on standards 7 pivoted at 8 and urged towards roll 1 by a pneumatic cylinder 14. The closeness of rolls 1 and 11 may be adjusted by a screw 25 having oppositely or differentially threaded ends co-operating with threaded bushes pivoted to the standards supporting the rolls. An upper coating roll 5 may be cleaned by another stone roll. Specifications 418,533, 423,512, and 474,596 are referred to.
