The ratio of the mean width to the mean thickness (mean width/mean thickness) of this titanium oxide mesocrystal is 10 to 100, and the specific surface area thereof is 10 m2/g or more. Thus, a titanium oxide mesocrystal that has a large size and a large specific surface area, and has excellent photocatalytic activity, photoluminescence properties, photoinduced charge separation properties, etc. can be provided. This titanium oxide mesocrystal is obtained by a method which comprises firing a precursor solution at 250 to 700°C in an air atmosphere or oxygen atmosphere, after which the solution is fired at 400 to 700°C in an oxygen atmosphere, the precursor solution comprising TiF4, NH4NO3, NH4F and water, the content ratio between TiF4 and NH4NO3 being 1:4 to 15 (molar ratio) and the content ratio between TiF4 and NH4F being 1:1 to 9 (molar ratio). This titanium oxide mesocrystal can also be obtained by a method which comprises firing the precursor solution at 400 to 700°C in an oxygen atmosphere. |
