A method of making tool blade by cascading binding material into a backing strip 12, providing abrasive particles and heating the binder using a radiation beam. Preferably a laser is scanned relative to the backing strip to form discrete regions of binder. Preferably, a characteristic of the binder layer, such as composition, ductility, adhesion, shear modulus or temperature, is varied continuously or in step-wise during deposition. Preferably, the binder comprises multiple powders delivered together or separately, and comprises a ductile braze material to provide and stress resistant root 32a. Preferably, the binder comprises material resistant to thermal expansion to form intermediate layer 32b. Preferably, a hard nickel braze is used on the edge of blade with abrasive particles 32c. Preferably, the abrasive particles are a mixture of diamond, WC or CBN and coated by CVD or PVD to improve wetting. Preferably, the binding material is tuned to the radiation beam. |
