A method of managing storage of digital content comprises determining one or more content elements that are eligible for compression. A content element is determined to be eligible for compression based on one or more characteristics of the content element. A compression rate for each of the one or more content elements, comprising an amount of compression to be applied to a content element, is determined. The amount of compression to be applied to the content element is determined as a function of one or more characteristics of the content element. Each of the one or more eligible content elements is then compressed according to the determined compression rate. The characteristic of the content element may be the age of the content element, the popularity of the content element, a compression flag set by a user, or the storage cost for the content element. The characteristic may also relate to the amount of available storage capacity of a data centre where the content element is stored. The content elements may comprise a document, a digital photograph, a video or an audio file. |
