Vulcanized rubber sheet, strip, or tape is coated on both sides with unvulcanized or partly vulcanized rubber or rubber compound. One or both sides may be temporarily covered with linen, cotton or paper, or with zinc stearate or similar powder which may subsequently be removed by the application of naphtha or other rubber solvent. The surfaces may be rendered non-tacky with french chalk. The sheet may be prepared by calendering rubber compound and vulcanizing in steam between wet cloths which are subsequently removed, and the sheet dried. Thin sheets of masticated rubber containing pitch and mineral rubber are calendered and removed from the rolls on cloths, the free surface being rolled up in contact with the vulcanized sheet. A second sheet is similarly applied to the other side.
