This picture display device comprises: a light source (11) having a plurality of modes in which the amount of illumination light emitted is different; a picture forming means (31) that forms a picture according to a picture signal; a light blocking means (21) that blocks illumination light by altering a light blocking rate in response to the picture signal; a projection means (50) that uses illumination light that has passed through the light blocking means to project the picture formed by the picture forming means; and a cooling means (42) that cools the picture forming means and the light blocking means according to a cooling capacity that varies according to each of the plurality of modes. The range in which the light blocking rate in the light blocking means is varied is independently set for each of the plurality of modes. |
