Methods and systems for conducting reconnaissance marine seismic surveys

A method of acquiring a marine seismic survey comprises towing a plurality of streamers 110 behind an acquisition vessel 105 and using an independent source vessel 125 to tow a source 130 above one or more of the plurality of towed streamers. There may be a plurality of independent source vessels. The sources may be towed in an undulating pattern, moving between the left and right sides of a source navigation region above the streamers. Also disclosed is a method of using independent source vessels to tow sources in an undulating manner above ocean bottom cables or nodes. Independent source vessels may also tow sources near the ends of streamers or outside the swath defined by the plurality of towed streamers.
