[Class 130] Filter plugs or wads, for example for use with cigarettes, are formed from strips of compressible material which are extensible transversely of their length, and substantially of the same thickness as the plugs, by compressing the longitudinal edges of the strips to form the required cross-section of plug. The strips 1, Figs. 1 and 11, are cut from a web or sheet of material and delivered end-toend on to a conveyer, which may consist of a continuous web 2 of wrapping material, which is wrapped about the strips to form a continuous rod for cutting into lengths as indicated by the chain lines in Fig. 1, the lengths including the joins 4 being deflected to one side and discarded. The strips may abut end to end, or may overlap at the ends. The material, such as crepe paper or cellulose wadding, is fed from a roll 5, Fig. 6, over a table 6 to knives 9, 10, which may be blunt so as to compress the material along the line of severance and give the strips cut off an oval form, as shown in Fig. 11. These may afterwards be further compressed to the circular form if desired. The strips are delivered to a rotatable fluted wheel 16, and are removed therefrom by a swinging gripper 18, Fig. 5, oscillated by a crank disc 19, which delivers the strips on to the wrapping material 2 at the same; speed as this is moving along the trough 3. A compression wheel 22, forming-mechanism 23, and pasting-device 24 then complete the formation of the continuous rod, which is cut into plug lengths by a cutter 26, the undesired portions at 4 being deflected by mechanism 27, which may be the same as that described in Specification 421,551. According to the Provisional Specification, the strip material may be folded into several superimposed layers after the manner of a fan, or in spiral form. |
