The systems may include a bioreactor having a plurality of vertically stacked modules designed to contain the aquatic plants and a liquid growth medium.

A method for measuring the plant floating volume (PFV) for an aquatic plant culture, the method comprising: harvesting a portion of the aquatic plant culture; delivering the portion of the aquatic plant culture to a holding chamber; allowing the portion of the aquatic plant culture to float to the surface of a liquid within the holding chamber; pumping liquid into the holding chamber to force the portion of the aquatic plant culture into a measurement tube; allowing the portion of the aquatic plant culture to float within a defined location in the measurement tube; and measuring the plant floating volume (PFV) of the portion of the aquatic plant culture in the measurement tube.
