The invention relates to a method for cleaning plastic, in particular shredded plastic, in the course of recycling plastic in a refiner comprising two mutually facing refiner tools, at least one of which is driven in a rotating manner and between which a working gap is delimited. The plastic to be cleaned is fed into the inlet end of the working gap, wherein pulp and other attached materials are rubbed off the plastic in the working gap, and the cleaned plastic together with the pulp and other attached materials which have been rubbed off are discharged at the outlet end of the working gap via an outlet. Pressurized water jets are sprayed into the fed plastic in front of or in the region of the inlet end of the working gap by means of nozzles. The invention also relates to a device which is suitable for carrying out the method.
