474,286. Change - speed mechanism. MATTIA, P. March 25, 1936, No. 8937. [Class 80 (ii)] This invention comprises improvements or modifications of the invention claimed in Specification 472,895. One improvement consists in that the planet carrier 2 of the mechanism constitutes the fly-wheel of the driving-engine with which it is associated. Another modification consists in providing a brake 30 which, whilst normally holding an outer member 14 of the one-way device 15 for preventing backward rotation of the reaction wheel 11, is adapted to be released and applied gradually so that the mechanism also fulfills the function of a clutch for taking up the drive. A further improvement consists in the provision of another brake 31 which is adapted to hold positively the reaction member when the driven shaft is driving the engine, so that the engine is driven at a higher speed to increase the braking effect. Specification 427,235 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
